1 Corinthians 12:18, 25-26 (NIV)
18 But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as He wanted them to be.
25-26 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it: if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) has played 19 years as the pitcher of the Detroit Tigers. On the day of the last game of the season, with no hopes of making it to the series, he learns that the team has been sold and he is going to be traded if he doesn’t retire. Amidst all the emotional baggage and incredible fatigue, Chapel realizes in the 8th inning that he’s pitched a perfect game so far. As his best friend, also the catcher, Gus Sinski stands at the mound, Chapel tells him, “I don’t know if I have anything left.” His shoulder is in incredible pain and he’s just worn out physically and emotionally. Gus, without a thought, looks at him and says “Chappy, you just throw whatever you got, whatever’s left. The boys are all here for you. We’ll back you up. We’ll be there.”
The challenge is clear. Christians around you every day are going through so many different trials and many of them are just worn out physically and emotionally. When you hear your neighbor say (with words or with his expressions), “I don’t know if I have anything left,” you make sure that you support him. Don’t put him down…Don’t talk about him behind his back…Don’t tell 20 people all the personal and private things he’s going through just so they can “pray” for him. You tell him, without a thought, “You just give it all that you have, whatever you’ve got. All the other Christians are here for you. We’ll back you up. We’ll be there.”
The body of Christ is one body. Do all that you can to make the body of Christ say to the tired and worn out, “We’ll be there.”
Here’s the video from YouTube of that interaction between Gus and Billy:
